Office Space

Where are you working right now? A bedroom, a kitchen counter, a back corner of a living room among your kids’ toys? It’s nearing the end of 2020 and many of us are still finding ourselves crammed into makeshift “offices” in the tiny corners of the only usable spaces in our homes that we have left.

Bred from necessity and the uncertainty of what working from an office will look like, one of the biggest trends in design build this year has been creating a true at-home office. Architects and designers are working with homeowners to repurpose spaces in basements, attics, garages or even building detached studios or ADUs to create dedicated working spaces.

One of our clients needed a place in their home to be able to focus and allow for critical thinking. As a part of a larger home renovation our team carved out a corner of the basement and created a small library, reading nook and large uninterrupted deskspace. We used translucent sliding door panels to allow light to filter into the space while also being closed off from the noise and activity of a full house. We used simple plywood wall panels and a nature based carpet tile to create a comfortable environment in which to focus and work.

Another office space we are currently designing is now through the development phase of the Alloy process and is starting to take shape. This client is looking to create a stand alone structure that not only solves her work from home needs but at some point could also function as a guest house or rental space.
