The first level is framed and the second level walls are 3/4 finished. All but two of our walls were built with the rain-screen furring installed while the wall was still on the deck saving ourselves a lot of time on ladders.
The unusual floor system for the second level floor proved to be quite a physical challenge for the Alloy Architecture & Construction crew. The Floor system is comprised of five, 12″ by 5 1/2″ inch by 22 foot long “Glue-lam” beams set 4 feet on center. These joists will remain exposed on the first level ceiling and will extend out over the windows to provide a platform for a window shade. Each of these had a profile cut on one end then were lifted into place buy our eight hands and four backs, after setting all five of these rather heavy beams on a Friday afternoon we were all ready for the weekend. With the Joists in place we continued with the 2 by 6 tongue and groove floor / ceiling. In a day and a half of hand nailing the 2 by 6 Tongue and groove we finished the Floor and the ceiling, saving 430 square feet of drywall finishing and the same amount of extra wood flooring.
And after all of that it looks pretty sweet from that little alley off of Avon st. and the views from the new bedroom are amazing.
