Vacationing on the Potomac for years, the clients approached us to design a new vacation home that would accommodate their growing family. We knew the clients wanted to take full advantage of the waterfront views at the end of the long, linear building site, so we situated the two master suites upstairs with covered overlook balconies to extend their living space outdoors towards that view. The kids’ bunkhouse lies behind the master suites while the living room, dining room and kitchen sit on the lower level. The front roofline overhangs to protect the balconies and also creates outdoor space on the main floor. Working with a modest budget, we found creative ways to enliven the facades and breakdown the scale of the building using different siding colors and orientations. The covered porch walkway provides a nice transition between the backyard and the front deck, which also includes a step down to an outdoor shower.
