When the homeowners first encountered Nimmo House, it was by chance; but the connection was immediate. Built in the early 19th century and located in Charlottesville’s Ridge Street neighborhood, one of the city’s historically Black neighborhoods, the house carried layers of history far beyond its walls. After more than 20 years living there, building relationships with neighbors, celebrating milestones, and even being married in the yard, honoring that legacy was essential.

Rather than starting over, the goal was to “do it right”: preserve the home’s historic character while making it truly livable for today and the next 100 years The original footprint and façade were maintained, including the shuttered windows and ornate front door, while completely reimagining the interior layout to improve flow and function. A once maze-like layout was transformed into a light-filled home with an elegant separation between public gathering spaces and private retreat.

The kitchen was moved to the front of the house, creating a welcoming hub that connects the shared spaces while filling the home with light and energy. At the same time, the primary bedroom was placed at the rear, offering calm and privacy. Throughout the renovation, historic elements were carefully restored and reinforced, seamlessly integrated with modern comforts, thoughtful built-ins, and essential structural upgrades.

The result is a home that feels both rooted and renewed- one that honors its past, supports modern life, and continues its story for generations to come.
