Alloy Workshop | Design Build Charlottesville | Logo Icon | Shennandoah Joe Coffee Shop

PROJECT: Architecture & Construction
DESCRIPTION: Commercial Design & Construction

Go for the coffee, stay for a lesson in coffee roasting. While updating this Charlottesville fixture, we wanted to ensure we weren’t changing the existing character just for the sake of a renovation. We wanted to enhance its already unique personality. We created an open space with distinct areas to meet each customer’s fix – the pour-over bar, espresso bar, drip coffee bar, and the front pastry bar. Wineries have tasting rooms, Shen Joe (as it is affectionately dubbed by the locals) has a “cupping” room, available for groups to taste and learn about their favorite drink.

The factory look and feel is softened with comfy chairs (donations from their devoted customers), bar seats and long, community tables for gathering. From the Sho Sugi Ban Japanese technique used to preserve the wood by charring it (a visually artistic nod to the coffee “roaster”, as well as the richness of coffee), to the pops of color from the hanging pendants, Shenandoah Joe’s mix of materials represents unique design and construction elements that we thrive on employing. Being able to preserve the wood organically without the use of chemicals or retardants is just one of the ways we contribute to the health of the community.

Check out C-VILLE Weekly’s story about this renovation.
