PROJECT: Architecture & Construction
DESCRIPTION: Commercial Design Build

“Full, bold flavors…” This is how the owners of Kanak describe their cuisine. This was also the inspiring design goal for the creation of this upscale Indian restaurant at 5th Street Station. We were fortunate to start with a blank canvas and creative clients. We collaborated with them to find the textures and colors that reflect the landscape, textiles, buildings, and culture of modern India. The restaurant is colorful, but not garish, sleek but not rigid, and always welcoming.

The center third of the dining room can be curtained off to create a private event space and the curtains can also be used to reduce the active floor space to be one third or two thirds of it’s full size. At quiet times, the customers in the compact versions of the room can still feel the pleasant bustle of a lively restaurant.

We wish we could say we also designed the recipes because this is Indian food like we had never been served before. Like their cuisine, the restaurant itself is a full, bold reflection of modern and traditional India.
