French Press

PROJECT: Architecture & Construction
DESCRIPTION: Commercial Design Build

The French Press embodies the refined yet inviting characteristics of its namesake. Warm wood floors and furniture compliment the familiarity of the exposed bricks along the walls. Everywhere possible, the structure and integrity of the original shell has been revealed, and reclaimed wood was brought in when needed for material consistency. However, subtle contemporary details such as the hanging lights, glossy ceiling finish, and the built- in bench bring the historic structure into the present.

The floor plan is simple and linear, yet effective. Facing the downtown sidewalk, a bay window projects a reclaimed wood table towards the street, encouraging personal engagement through the storefront glass. The barista welcomes customers at the entryway, keeping activity towards the public half, while the cozy lounge in the back is protected from noise and movement through an elegant drop ceiling and a custom wood slat screen. A long built-in bench and tables span the central area, seating the majority of the customers. In the evenings, The French Press becomes a bustling social hub for open mic nights, when the lounge transforms into an intimate performance setting. The linear plan of the shop draws listeners from the front to the back easily and without confusion, while carrying sound towards the front.

The French Press is a unique third place between home and work that facilitates conversation and provides a comfortable and warm environment to retreat into.
