Broad Axe Road, Art Studio
PROJECT: Construction by Alloy Architecture and Construction
Architectural design by BRW Architects
DESCRIPTION: ADU
A Creative Retreat in the Trees
When these clients first built their home with Alloy Architecture & Construction, they envisioned their property as something that would evolve alongside their lives. Tucked into the woods, the setting offered privacy, light, and a deep connection to nature. Years
later, that vision expanded to include a dedicated space for one of the homeowner’s works as an artist.
What began as an act of love from her husband became a thoughtfully designed standalone studio nestled among the trees. Working from an architectural design created in partnership with BRW Architects, Alloy brought the vision to life through construction, craftsmanship,
and careful attention to material finishes.
From the outset, the design centered on the creative process. Expansive windows were carefully placed to frame the surrounding woods and invite in shifting natural light throughout the day. Natural materials, including warm hardwood flooring and organic finishes,
echo the landscape beyond the glass, blurring the boundary between indoors and out. Our client describes the feeling simply: she can “be in the trees — like she’s part of nature.”
While the studio was designed first and foremost as a space for art, flexibility was built into its foundation. The structure includes a full bathroom and a layout that supports workshops, quiet mornings of yoga, exercise, and even future guest accommodations. It
functions as both a creative retreat and a fully livable extension of the home.
Having previously partnered with Alloy on their primary residence, this family returned with trust and a shared understanding of how they live. That long-term relationship allowed the team to approach the studio with clarity and intention, translating the architectural
design into a space that feels both beautiful and highly functional in daily life.
Today, the studio is filled with light, creativity, and community. It’s a place where art is made, workshops are hosted, and mornings begin with movement among the trees.
The result is more than a standalone structure. It is a personal sanctuary, rooted in nature, thoughtfully built to support a life of creativity for years to come.
