Having spent  a week or so with the new collaboration between Fatboy Slim (Norman Cook) and David Byrne, it remains a bit of a mystery to me.  Fatboy Slim fans won’t find the typical sample driven, phaser laden dancefloor pop but rather a more subdued side undoubtedly brought out by the enigmatic Byrne.  Since each track features a different vocalist, the unlikely combination of Cook & Byrne creates the connective tissue for this 22 track biography of former former first lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos.

While it will be difficult to work any of the tracks into one of my DJ sets, Here Lies Love provides a cultural education through both the lyrics and instrumentation transporting listeners to the dance scene of the Philippines in the 1970’s.  Stand out favorites include, “Dancing Together” featuring Sharon Jones, “Men Will Do Anything” with Alice Russell, and one of David Byrne’s two vocal appearances on “American Troglodyte”.

The album can sound a bit like an animated musical soundtrack at times, but front to back remains a completely enjoyable exploration in to musical storytelling and artistic expression.
